影音, soundtrack week
ying yin sounds out 影音 which translates literally into “audio-visual.” In this new series, we explore the relationship between visual media (including cinema, animation, among others) and sounds of East Asia. How does aural design interact with the imagery and narrative presented on screen? Sometimes, it serves as an ancillary mode of constructing atmosphere and mood. Sometimes, songs are embedded in the narrative where characters sing recurring the tune. Sometimes, instrumentals supplement dialogue and action to heighten suspense. Other songs sneak into a scene to implicate key narrative or historical subtext.
This Wednesday, we introduce a sampling of original sound track from films and animation. Among these are scores and original songs by composers and bands who elevated the visual media to which they were tasked to respond sonically.
Last week’s playlist is up on our LinkTree. Be on the look out for part 2!
